A MENTOR & FRIEND

SCOPE’s Youth Empowerment Program (YEP) strives to improve the greater LA community by building personal relationships through meaningful mentorship. Whether it be helping out with homework or discussing a difficult day at school, YEP volunteers are intimately engaged with their student's needs. YEP ensures that diverse elementary school students, including those from underserved or disadvantaged backgrounds, are provided with a consistent role model in order to facilitate their educational success, self-esteem, and future aspirations.

Mentoring with YEP

Fall Quarter:

  • Participate in a 2-unit, upper division Social Welfare Training Course, taught by YEP’s leadership coordinators for new incoming members. This is a contract course in which SCOPE manually enrolls our new members during our annual fall orientation. Our course intends to train new mentors for working with our target population through, but not limited to, imparting effective mentorship strategies and dispositions, providing the background context of our community partner, reflections on how our identities and positionalities impact our mentor-mentee relationships, as well as ideation of activities for site.

Winter and Spring Quarter:

  • Begin making weekly visits to your mentee to our mentorship site, The Boys & Girls Club Mar Vista Gardens Branch, in Culver City. Mentors choose one weekday to attend site, and transportation is provided.

  • Attend field trips to educational sites with your mentee.

  • Enjoy social and family events to bond with our close-knit network of mentors.

Interested Students

  • Look out for our application here or on our social media at the end of Spring and start of Fall. All incoming and current UCLA students are eligible to apply!

Expectations

  • Commit one, full academic year of service to ensure consistent mentorship for the students we serve.

  • Attend annual retreat for mentors

  • Attend at least one social and the field trip per quarter

Empowering Youths

YEP is focused on developing strong relationships with our mentees, and mentors have a large degree of flexibility to choose specific activities they would like to carry out with their mentees.
